SUMMARY:Secrets of Shipwrecks – Janet Dickinson
DESCRIPTION:in collaboration with the Oxford Preservation Trust\nStories of lost ships and their cargoes hold an enduring curiosity, thinking about what was lost and what might even be recovered. Oxygen deprived environments can mean that some items are preserved to a remarkable degree and advances in maritime archaeology have resulted in some spectacular recoveries as well as hope of further discoveries. This talk will focus on a series of historic shipwrecks dating from antiquity to the eighteenth century and what they reveal of the worlds from which they disappeared.\nDr Janet Dickinson is Departmental Lecturer (History) at Oxford University’s department for Lifelong Learning and Lecturer at New York University in London. Her research focuses on the Tudors and court history and occasionally on shipwrecks and drowned books. Janet is a convenor of the Tudor & Stuart Seminar at the Institute of Historical Research and a committee member of the Society for Court Studies.\n
