The Complete Bach Cello Suites, Recital One – Guy Johnston, violoncello
The work of pure genius, the Bach unaccompanied Cello Suites have been revered by all as the pinnacle of perfection. Powerful, moving, and virtuosic, the complete work has often been likened to life’s spiritual journey through dance. At times profound and at others joyous, the experience of the full six suites in one evening takes the audience through a variety of emotions – poignant or rapturous, carefree or brooding, through complex interplay and the sheer beauty of the line. Imagine this performance in the magnificence of the Divinity School!
Guy Johnston is one of the most exciting British cellists of his generation, performing with many leading international conductors and orchestras, including at the BBC Proms. He is an advocate for chamber music, and a prolific recording artist, often championing contemporary British composers.
Guy Johnston plays the 1692 Antonio Stradivari cello known as the ‘Segelman, ex Hart’, kindly loaned to him through the Beare’s International Violin Society by a generous patron.
