Drinking with Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach had a passion for wine. It goes beyond the practicalities of day-to-day life to the company he kept, the venues in which he performed, and even the subject of his compositions.
Join wine historian Ron Merlino and broadcaster Hannah French as they open three doors into Bach’s world of music and wine: his life at home with wife Anna Magdalena, the Coffee Houses he frequented with Christian Friedrich Henrici (aka the librettist Picander), and his infamous visit to the Court of King Frederick the Great in Potsdam.
Sample four wines as you hear excerpts of some of Bach’s best-loved compositions and discussion takes you from the vineyards and winepress to the court orchestra and organ loft. Have you ever questioned what you really taste in a fine wine, or hear in the music of Bach? This event throws light on the alchemy of winemaking and musical counterpoint; the big questions of taste – both now and then; and the culture of drinking in the eighteenth century.
There is a Spotify playlist so that you can listen in advance.
