GIFTS AND BOOKS: Dr Nicholas Perkins
From early myth to the present
Sir Victor Blank Lecture Theatre, Weston Library
The Bodleian Library’s latest exhibition explores both the joy and complexity of gifts and books: from ancient myths of offering and sacrifice to exquisitely decorated gifts for royalty; and from the dangers of an unwise Valentine’s card to new stories for young readers about the power of generosity. Curator and scholar Dr Nicholas Perkins will introduce some of the exhibition’s most intriguing books and stories, asking how books nurture relationships; how objects and people can be entangled in the bonds of exchange; and how storytelling itself is a powerful form of gift-giving.
Dr Nicholas Perkins is Associate Professor and Tutor in English, St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford.
