MAGNIFICAT!
The Choral Foundations in Concert
Magdalen College Choir | New College Choir | Cathedral Choir of Christ Church | Frideswide Voices Instruments of Time and Truth
Peter Holder, Robert Quinney, Mark Williams, directors
An evening celebrating magnificence with The Three Choral Foundations, opening with Handel’s Ode to St Cecilia – the patron saint of music – a work that was so popular that it was revived nine times for performances by Handel during his lifetime. Wonderful conversations between instruments follow in the unique orchestration of the ever-popular and colourful Brandenburg No 4, which will, tonight, be directed by Mark Williams from the harpsichord.
The evening will end with Bach’s gloriously grand Magnificat, with five soloists, a five-part choir, and – for the time – a large orchestra. Resplendence and jubilation marking our ‘Magnificent Oxford 2025’.
Programme
George Frederick Handel Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day, HWV 76
