Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin
Sebastian Hill, tenor
William Harmer, piano
Schubert Die schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid
of the Mill) Text by Wilhelm Müller
There are several lieder routes we could have taken to link to journeys and wayfarers, such as Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Schubert’s Winterreisse, or Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel. We are delighted to be presenting Oxford graduates, Sebastian and William, who will be performing Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid of The Mill): a tale of youthful hope and unrequited love; a journey where both our hapless hero (tenor) and the brook (piano) that accompanies him from initial bubbling joy to the metaphoric lullaby, as the poet’s final resting place, are protagonists throughout the cycle. Rest well, rest well, close your eyes. Wanderer, you weary one, you are at home.
