We are seeking papers for Tallis 2020
Academic Symposium & Concert June 19 and 20 2020
To celebrate the history and 450th anniversary of Thomas Tallis’ 40-part motet Spem in alium, Oxford Festival of the Arts in collaboration ORA Singers, is putting on a two-day interdisciplinary symposium at the Magdalen College Grove Auditorium on 19 & 20 June 2020. We invite you to join us on a journey into the mysteries that lie behind Spem in alium and its contemporary reflection, Sir James MacMillan’s Vidi aquam.
This exciting symposium, featuring eminent British and international scholars, is the first of its kind for ORA Singers. It will delve deeply into the compositional history of the 450-year-old Spem in alium, and will also include insights from contemporary composers, and a breathtaking concert performance by the award-winning ORA Singers, joined by Oxford University’s very own Schola Cantorum. Featuring music from ORA’s brand new album release, including the world premiere of Sir James MacMillan’s 40-part motet, there will also be a chance to hear all about ORA Singers’ latest commission through a pre-concert talk with Sir James, led by Artistic Director, Suzi Digby.
We are now seeking proposals for 30-minute papers to be presented as part of the Tallis 2020 Symposium. We would be delighted to hear from scholars on any aspect of Thomas Tallis’ Spem in alium, including its historical context and compositional style.
