A hand woven weavescape in golds, red and green

In November 2019 we launched an exciting competition with our friends at OX Magazine to invite entries for the cover design of our festival brochure for 2020.

We offered suggestions to aid creativity; this year’s festival inspiration The Field of Cloth of Gold; a colour palette based on illuminated manuscripts including gold, and the themes of royalty, splendour, fraternity and friendship.

The results are in and our winner is Oxford artist and weaver Julia Engelhardt. Julia is self-taught and describes her works as ‘weavescapes’, a blend of weaving and painting with a sculptural element as the artworks have a truly 3D appearance. Julia made not one, but two beautiful pieces for us. We chose the piece called ‘Cloth of Splendour’ for our brochure cover and we loved the work so much that we changed the whole design of our brochure to embrace Julia’s weave.

Obviously events have somewhat overtaken us and we are still working out how the festival might take place this year. However we will definitely be producing an e-brochure and Julia’s beautiful work takes pride of place on the cover and throughout the brochure.
